Everyone on the line-up performs something inspired by a song-be it stand-up, a story, or a written piece-then sings that song karaoke. Performers choose their own songs based on the theme for that month's show; each one is a type of playlist or mixtape. ALL OVER THE PLACE: CHARLIE KASOV'S DEBUT ALBUM LIVE RECORDING
Comedian Charlie Kasov, after eight years in stand-up, records his debut album, "All Over The Place" at Union Hall before setting off to perform all over the U.S. this summer. Come laugh gratuitously about stories from his childhood, college, being a math teacher, working in politics, and his unfortunate interview on Fox local news. Or just hang out upstairs and eat delicious corn dogs.

Hosted By

Seen on Comedy Central's "Colbert Report" MTV's "I Just Want My Pants Back" and MTV2's "Guy Code" - He's also performed stand-up on Comedy Central's "Live at Gotham"

Featuring:

Charlie Kasov's a New York comedian and blogger for MTV2's "Guy Code." He's been featured on Fox News, TimeOut New York, Uinterview.com, and at clubs all over the country, such as House of Comedy in Minneapolis, Zanie's in Chicago, and Mottley's in Boston. Union Hall is one of his favorite venues to perform in, and he's psyched to record his first album here.

Host of Park Slope's own "Sack Lunch" and a two-time performer at the Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland, Oregon.

A Brooklyn native who still writes all of his jokes with a pen on paper. He is a regular contributor to MTV's "Guy Code" blog and Barnes & Noble's "SparkLife" blog and is the creator of the weekly East Village show, "Sunday Night Stand-Up".

THU 5/23: 7:30pm Doors / 8pm Show / $8

The Shitty Pixies began organically out of Evan and Ezra's shared obsession with the Pixies. Lulu from the Vandelles and Jesse from Ponyblood fell in so naturally at the first rehearsal it immediately became clear that we had to make this a regular thing.

Karaoke Killed the Cat is the infamous karaoke party for people who never thought they'd like karaoke. Hosted by the frenzied duo of Chris Goldteeth and Lord Easy, they have been changing the world's view of what karaoke can be since 2003. Karaoke Killed the Cat brings together equal parts vocal chord shattering sing-along and booty popping party. Mix in sprinkles of crowd surfing, choreography and feats of strength; the result is a party unlike any other. As the show draws from the unchecked intensity and fervent enthusiasm of its patrons,Karaoke Killed the Cat becomes just as fun to watch, as it is to participate in. Forget about sounding good, this is about going hard and having the time of your life.

"Warm, smokey, laced with honey and rough around the edges like a piece of cedar siding, Elijah Ocean's voice couldn't have come into my life at a better time. Isn't that how most great things come to us? Out of the blue and without any announcement except that feeling of rightness. That confirmation that yes, there are still people out there making the kind of music that resonates, that is made for a purpose beyond money or fame. That is made simply because it must be made. All Americana and musky, emotion-ridden tunes, Ocean sings sad songs without being pathetic and sings happy ones with the grin of a troubadour." -Bleeker Street Beat

Somewhere between Waylon Jennings, Mumford and Sons and Zac Brown, you'll find North of Nashville (named "Band To Watch" by the Portland Press Herald, March 2013). The outlaw country duo keeps one foot planted in tradition and the other in a wild and lawless territory of American roots music. Whether you're a Country fan or not, we'll bet you've never seen anything like North of Nashville in any direction of Music City.

Diana Potakh and Holly Overton, formerly of American Sun, felt the urgency to create music from within their explorative souls, experimenting with their obsession with early country music like Loretta Lynn and Waylon Jennings. At a beautiful Summer beach gathering, they asked bass playing friend Andrew McNey, formerly of The K-Holes, to join in. Kevin Faulkner, of The Men, maximizes the experience with eerie and beautiful lap steel licks.

Dumpster Hunter - led by the gangly, spasmodic Jeff Taylor - shatters the psychic wall between audience and performer, exposing a weird, compelling and emotionally naked universe.

The New Jersey born, Brooklyn based songwriter and his band - Mark Guiliana (Drums), Steve Wall (Guitar/Keys/Voice), and Chris Morrissey (Bass) - gang up on unsuspecting audiences, using their large mouths and acrobaticmusical arrangements both as tools and semi-lethal weapons.

Exciting, sometimes unplanned sit-ins with artists like Feist, Matisyahu, and Trixie Whitley punctuated the last few years of Taylor's journey.

Dumpster Hunter's incendiary live set is largely comprised of the rollercoaster material from their debut album, 'Frustration In Time Travel,' the first release on Rockwood Music Hall Recordings, which is due out in March 2013.

Who else but Cathy could sing laments of the everyday in such a driving, propulsive fashion? Not since Jonathan Richman has any musical outfit justified a look at the everyday with music like this. Who else but Cathy could take a flamethrower to the curtains of any argument about influence? Sure, there's some identifiable ancestry on their debut release, Corner Frenzy - the best of '90s indie rock (The Archers of Loaf, Guided By Voices), the late '80s Hoboken sound (Yo La Tengo), but they inform Cathy's subtly. They jangle, yes, but they pound behind it with an unmatched frenzy, reminding listeners of great bands like The Wipers and The Replacements.

Corner Fenzy hardly sounds like a band's unsure first album. Many bands record their first records as units with a still-undefined sound. Not Cathy. They switch modes throughout songs, both as songwriters and players, whether it's to add poignant stripped down passages to the end of rave-up songs ("Will You Won't You") or for a thoughtful chorus or bridge section ("Drunk Ghosts"). Self produced by Cathy and mixed by Jim Waters (Jonathan Fireater, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Calexico, RL Burnside, Sonic Youth), Corner Fenzy is an album with ragged edges, complex curves and melodic songwriting that captures the heat and excitement of rock- n-roll's best. Calling to mind bands like The Kinks, The Who, Nick Lowe, and Elvis Costello. Cathy are fast, exciting, and felt. Happy to holler, scream, and stomp to the commonalities of experience and loss and too smart to steer into the easy pitfalls of convention, the band takes a spirited rush at rock n roll with no apologies made.

"A band that doesn't seem to know quite how good they are."--Tamsin Holleran, Joonbug.com

"Taurus's brand of ethereal and blended rock landscapes is brimming with an unhinged sense of enthusiasm, which is equally matched with a well manicured pop-intelligence"--Chris Wood, Watchoutfor.com.au

Alan Hampton's debut record, "The Moving Sidewalk" effortlessly showcases his range of musicality and resourcefulness. His tender, ashy voice shimmers over lush string trios, Dr. Who synthesizers, and finger-picked acoustic guitars, all performed by many of Brooklyn's finest musicians. The ten, carefully constructed songs are intricate hybrids of various genres and influences, pooling from Brian Wilson, Wayne Shorter, and The Band.

Enhanced only by its homebrewed process, "The Moving Sidewalk" was recorded in Pete Rende's Brooklyn apartment, and mixed in David Boucher's Culver City garage. The album's cover features Hampton's whittled self-portrait standing on a winding sidewalk that ribbons from a cityscape made of papier mâché and wire form, which was designed and constructed with close friend Lindsey Anderson.

An extensive musical education; years of experience as a sideman and bassist in NYC; and practice in a variety of different genres have all contributed to the abundant reservoir of resources that make Hampton's record at once eloquent and unassuming. Hampton studied composition and performance, and toured and performed with jazz luminaries Terence Blanchard, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz in Southern California. After completing the program, he moved to Brooklyn where he made his mark as a bassist and sideman, performing around the world and recording with the likes of Gretchen Parlato, Sufjan Stevens, Clare and the Reasons, Robert Glasper, and Elizabeth and the Catapult.

Since the arrival of "The Moving Sidewalk," and his leap from sideman to solo artist, Hampton has gained notoriety as a singer and a songwriter, and has appeared on records by singer Gretchen Parlato, and bassist Derrick Hodge, who is known for his work with Common, Mos Def, and Maxwell.

Where "The Moving Sidewalk" will take Hampton next, he can't be sure. But the evidence rings loud and clear: In the world of music, Alan Hampton is quickly setting the pace.

Half Waif is the project of Nandi Rose Plunkett. It began, and continues today, in a bedroom in Brooklyn. It is a tribute to both the dark resonance of that borough and to the textures of her multicultural childhood home.

After releasing the song "Vespers" independently via bandcamp in July 2012, Half Waif joined renowned band Deerhoof on a split 7", released by Brooklyn label Famous Class in October 2012 as part of its LAMC series. These days, with the mesmerizing efforts of Thomas Alton Crane on drums and Greg Chudzik on bass, Half Waif is preparing for the release of their first EP, Future Joys, due out in Spring 2013.

Rachel Brotman is a singer, songwriter and pianist born and raised in Manhattan. After many years living and performing in New Orleans (sharing bills with acts ranging from Vampire Weekend to Dr. John and performing multiple years at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival) Brotman is back in NYC debuting her most recent project as a bandleader. The group includes John Raymond (flugelhorn), Yago Vazquez (piano), Zach Lane (bass) and Anthony Taddeo (drums) and features Brotman's soulful, tightly woven compositions and arrangements. Their EP Anecdote has been met with a great deal of praise, her own performance being called "extraordinary" and "a breath of fresh air," the EP hailed as being "in a league of it's own." Additionally, the group has been featured on NPR's wnyc Soundcheck and most recently Brotman was chosen by Giant Step as one of their acclaimed Next Step artists.

"I saw a rather fascinating vocal performance on Friday night at Two Moon Art House and Cafe in Brooklyn. This is only the second "Solo Voice" concert by the young Swiss singer-songwriter Emilie Weibel, and there is doubtless much refinement to come. What is striking about her show is that she travels light, just her voice, a looper, a sampler, a few essentials to connect the devices to the speakers, a book of poetry by Mallarme, and a homemade music box with a player strip she punched herself. She uses the looper to accompany her own voice with itself and build layers of sound live and mostly in the moment. The effect is exceptionally delicate at times, playfully idiosyncratic, and sometimes stirring, a sort of musical bricolage that reminded me of everything from the Symbolist poets, to Dada and the Futurists, the onomatopoetic conceits and childlike fancies of the "Banquet Years", and - given the technology she was using - the eccentricities of more recent artists in the vein of Bjork. The fruitful irony of all these associations is that they add up to something original rather than borrowed. I look forward to what the future holds for this very intriguing project." - John Osburn (September 2012)

The Unsacred Hearts draw from a wide range of influences: formative punk rock, outlaw country, warped '60s blues, Dylan rhymes and gutbucket soul to name a few. These and other musical strands are apparent in Unsacred Hearts music but never supplant the band's own original noise.

The Hearts have been writing, recording and performing since late 2003. Front-man Joe Willie started the group with hometown friends Travis Harrison (drums) and Dave Siegel (guitar) after the dissolving of their previous band for which Joe served as an outboard lyricist. Bassist/vocalist Andy Ross spent over a year in the band before joining OK Go. He was replaced in 2005 by S. Andy Bean (also of the Two Man Gentlemen Band).

On stage, the Hearts take audiences on sweaty beer-soaked joy-rides, summoning comparisons to Mitch Ryder, Guided By Voices and vintage Clash. Alongside original tunes, you'll often hear twisted reinterpretations culled from the band's repertoire of cover material. Joe Willie, always a In the studio, the Hearts challenge the limitations of their guitar-bass-drums lineup and embrace its simplicity as well. Their debut 2004 self titled EPoffers seven songs in 14 minutes of full-throttle, ultra-distilled rock about rock. Their 2006 album In Defense of Fort Useless displays the use of myriad musical textures, from spare experimental country to the meanest punk.

In 2011, the Hearts released The Honor Bar, a long awaited sophomore album which puts Joe Willie's imagistic lyrics and one-of-a-kind speak-singing at the forefront. This is their most fully realized platter to date.

There are many garages in America. Some are workspaces, some are storage units. Some are more akin to a barn or shed. Some are suburban and spotless while others are, quite frankly, rat-infested shitholes. Some are laboratories, some are launching pads. Some are dungeons, some are safehouses. Some are fire hazards, some are gyms, some are breweries and wineries, some are sunless, and some are full of sparks. A few are museums, fewer are tombs, and fewer still are birthplaces, spots of origin, homes in and of themselves.

There was a particular one just like the last example, full of sweat and old radio. It housed R&B tunes, surf rock, and punky doo wop. It held a lot of noise and a lot of fun. It sheltered a particular brand of liberation, something quintissentially American and cocky, but also blissfully unaware of itself. It contained a band that started out with nothing but Ramones covers and turned into something else fairly rapidly. Something comprised of four very good friends having a very good time and calling the whole party Oh No and the Tiger Pit. They played in the garage for a while, then they played some shows, then they decided to keep going to find out what else might happen along the way.

Felipe, whose Incan lineage descends from the Urumba, migrated to Long Island, New York, where he came of age amid the face-melting atonal guitars and flannel that ruled 90s indie rock. Encouraged to play saxophone as a way to pick up chicks, wayward jazz was his other fix. Rosa crawled out the Marianas Trench and arrived in Giuliani New York asking directions to the Mudd Club. Not finding it, she consoled herself with a Gibson SG, a more reliable companion than the musicians she used to date. Dave was Jersey-bred on a steady diet of Van Halen, Tool and Jane's Addiction. He has followed every Phillies game since age ten. Through the magic of the Village Voice and the digital free-for-all of Craigslist, they met, befriended, collaborated, fought, and made up in time to make the irreverent indie noise-pop they call cholo.

Bright Brown is sonic cinema. Bittersweet layers and textures abound, and beautifully crafted songs exist at the core. Alex Nahas' songwriting boldly chooses to sit "between the meager and the mundane" elevating the everyday.

Since the immediate chemistry or their chance meeting on the New York City Subway a few years ago, Alex Nahas and Nick Smeraski have released two critically acclaimed records, the intimate and moody "No Matter How Faint There's Light In Everything" and the more epic and celebratory "Oceans", while wowing audiences with explosive duo performances. Alex accompanies his darkly optimistic vocals on The Chapman Stick, a seldom seen ten-stringed electric instrument covering a sonic range from deep, earthy bass to shimmering highs, while Nick Smeraski drums viscerally textural pulses that choose moments to lash out in restrained violence.

Alex Nahas is best known for founding the critically acclaimed post rock band, Laughingstock. http://www.laughingstocksf.com Other achievements include touring and recording with John Vanderslice, and producing / engineering the first Mates of State EP.

Bright Brown's music follows the trail blazed by such innovative artists as Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, The Flaming Lips, Daniel Lanois, Animal Collective, Sigur Ross, Mark Hollis, Peter Gabriel, Jeff Buckley and Radiohead.

What we lack in precision, we make up for in style. Oh and we all have cats.

Bombadil's last album was almost its swan song. The quartet of singers, songwriters and multi-instrumentalists - Stuart Robinson, Daniel Michalak, Bryan Rahija and James Phillips - recorded All That the Rain Promises in ten days, while living in a barn in Oregon. The barn was so cold, they had to warm their hands by a wood-burning stove between takes. The album's sparkling blend of folk, rock and gentle psychedlia earned rave reviews, but Michalak's continuing hand problems made the future look grim. He'd developed a case of neural tension that made playing and driving painful. They toured sporadically and weren't sure about the future of the band.

Small Houses is a Philadelphia based indie/folk project featuring the songs and poems of Flint native Jeremy Quentin. Artfully crafted finger-style guitar playing, and softly sung melodies describing the people, love, and homes of Quentin's life.

"Quentin refuses to sleep sometimes, unable to rest on any complacency when it comes to what we find value in. he knows beauty and he knows sadness and it puts them into the same vase." - Daytrotter

Growing up in a military family, Michaela Anne lived as a modern day gypsy - traveling the American terrain as well as abroad. Always active musically, she picked up influences as diverse as the places she lived. Now planted firmly in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, a neighborhood with an imagined taste of country life within the metropolis of New York City, she has found a home, and band. Her songs weave stories of the hardships and pleasures in life, notably influenced by the American military family lifestyle. Blending country, blues and folk with heartfelt lyrics and a powerful vocal delivery, Michaela Anne evokes the ever-changing landscape of American life she witnessed firsthand.

Andrea and Pete Connolly have written their lives into Birds and Arrows newly released record "Coyotes". Inspired by their bucolic surroundings, the record was recorded at their small, 19th-century, school house turned cabin nestled in the woods on an 88 acre horse farm in Rougemont, NC. Mixed by Chris Stamey of the dB's, "Coyotes" has a polished yet still organic sound that emotes desperation and longing with a hopeful overtone. Stamey describes the album as "An amazing record, overflowing with invention, dedication and exuberance."

The sweeping melodies throughout "Coyotes" are beautiful and light. The couples' song crafting can evoke a wide range of emotions, that at moments can make you smile and then quickly shift into nostalgic melancholy. Corbie Hill of Independent Weekly noted "After six years as a band, it seems as if the Connollys have come to a point of comfort, not only musically but personally: Their new rural home, where they moved in early 2012, enables these two to live as they have wanted to for years. Andrea is surrounded by horses, while Pete drags fields and mends fences in the rural quiet."

Pete and Andrea worked with cellist Josh Starmer, who played a wide range of instruments on the record such as cello, mandolin, dilruba and tambora, helping give "Coyotes" it's distinct sound. An impressive cast of local and national talent where also invited to play on the record such as Robert Sledge of Ben Folds Five, Dirk Shumaker of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, James Wallace of Mount Moriah, Dave Hadley and Andrew Grimm of June Star and more. To find out more or hear music from "Coyotes" visit them at www.birdsandarrows.com

Canadian songwriter Charlotte Cornfield has mastered a potent blend of soulful vocals and stylish guitar playing and it's no surprise that The Montreal Mirror named her "The next it-girl of folk-rock."
"Cornfield's got something luminous about her," scribed Maisonneuve Magazine. Seeing her perform or listening to her recordings, it's hard to miss.

Boston, MA's own PoL formed in 2012 with one simple goal: to be the best Huey Lewis & The News cover band you … or anyone else … has ever heard.

Featuring a five-piece line-up and a full horn section, The Power of Love boasts an impressive collection of Boston indie rock and punk rock stalwarts (including members and former members of Big D and the Kid's Table, The Fatal Flaw, This Blue Heaven, Razors in the Night, Mount Peru, Lannen and more).

PoL's live show is no ironic, tongue-in-cheek takedown of Huey Lewis, nor is it a slavish tribute act. The band has the pure musicianship to honor the original songs and their arrangements, while still attacking the material with a raw rock and roll ferocity. Also, with no single front person and band members sharing vocal duties equally, PoL truly lives up to its motto:

"No Huey; Just the News"

That's The Power of Love.

Who says pessimism can't be catchy as hell?

Boston's The Fatal Flaw combines a playful juxtaposition of biting cynicism and shameless pop sensibility earning them distinction as a band worth watching.

The Fatal Flaw formed in early 2008 when Joel Reader, California native and pop-punk veteran, suddenly found himself bandless in the numbing cold of a Boston winter. Not one to mill about aimlessly, Reader quickly assembled a veritable who's-who of Northeast rockers. The new act features Reader on bass and lead vocals, Glen Fant and Aaron Spransy on guitars, backed by Randy Tartow on drums.

The new bandmates immediately began to write collaboratively, creating melodies in line with Reader's traditional pop sensibility while infusing the songs with the beautiful Northeast pessimism to which he had quickly acclimated. Through compositions that question religion, the traditional work-a-day lifestyle, faith and love, the band creates a brilliant, biting new spin on traditional power-pop and rock music.

The result is a sound that rivals some of rock's catchiest songsmiths and yet also presents a brutally honest worldview. Engaging, energetic, and thought-provoking, The Fatal Flaw captivates each successive audience they face, and are quickly earning a place among Boston's most in-demand rock acts. The Fatal Flaw may spout cynicism in their songs, but the crowds they've entertained come away with nothing but optimism for the band's future.

HillyTown Presents:
Funny, sad and sweet songs from a city boy gone woodsy.

"It's as if each song creates its own little world full of sparkling sounds that seem to resonate from every corner - Infectiously catchy music that surrounds you. Like a blanket of soothing sounds, Hey Anna's EP will lift you from whatever world you find yourself in and gently place you into their world of creativity and passion." - marsbands.com

"The revelatory moment for us and Hey Anna came at the 2 minute and 10 second mark "Light", one of five songs on their eponymous debut EP released this fall. What had begun as a slightly ramshackle bit of delicately harmonized and acoustic chamber pop suddenly commenced to build, slowly and steadily, guitars and drums edging ever skyward to one of the more dramatic and celestially sonic eruptions of recent memory. Led by three sisters -- Anna, Erin and Katie Rauch-Sasseen -- the New York-based band magnify their arty folk/pop into something grand but grounded and framed with a modest, unpretentious approach. "Light" and the deft, melodic "Blackout" feature the sisters trading off instruments and matter-of-fact vocals without a hint of sibling rivalry or overworked angst." directcurrentmusic.com

For Patrick Krief the existence of Hundred Thousand Pieces is nothing short of miraculous.

It's a culmination of a journey that began at the knee of his musically inclined uncle - where a young Patrick scratched at the six strings his older self would master; an expedition that truly took flight when, filtered through the songbooks of Messers McCartney, Lennon, Harrison and Hendrix, the 13-year-old guitar prodigy snuck into bars around his native Montreal, jamming with their house bands and one that continues to mature with every face-melting flurry the virtuoso burns into the blown minds of audiences the world over.

Within the album's songwriting, keen listeners can hear the triumphs and scars accumulated though nearly 8 years spent on the road with orchestral indie-rock innovators The Dears - a duty began as a short 5 week tour and continues to this day - as well as his own ex-musical powerhouse Black Diamond Bay.

Captured in its sparse beautifully heartbreaking, cinematic arrangements, one can hear the anguish of a heart left broken, beating its last tortured beats for the listener, exposing Patrick Krief's soul, unencumbered.

Produced and performed almost entirely by the man himself (Drums, Piano, Keys, Bass, Guitar, Percussion and Vocals), Hundred Thousand Pieces is an album that demands repeated listens to be understood.
