Danish rock band Darling Don’t Dance present a unique unity of style and substance. While unabashedly rooted in the commercial explosion of punk rock in the early ‘90s, the band’s sound also evokes the visceral Portland indie of the latter ‘90s and the artier sounds of New York and Boston in the late ‘80s.

SAT 7/31: 8PM / $8adv /. $10dos
SOPERS
Japanther's music is, all at the same time, poignant, intense, danceable and fun. While they often refer to themselves as "more of an art project than a band" Japanther gets points for making some of the most memorable, hummable and fun music of any art project in recent memory. Japanther is part Screamers intensity, part Misfits anthemery, part RZA samples/beats and part Lightning Bolt art/freakshow.

"Singer-songwriters Debbie Andrews and Mike Blaxill front this quintet...great harmony-laced pop with a touch of 70s California. They have everything - sing-a-long hooks, strong harmonies, efficient but great guitar solos. Classical/jazz-influenced Debbie Andrews' work on Wurlitzer and Hammond B3 just as often adds a hip and dreamy edge to the material. Her harmonies with guitar troubadour Blaxill are picture perfect. The material is solidly written, well produced, earnest pop that is appealing on many layers. Blaxill's vocals might be at least as valuable to the mix. When he's singing lead, you are left wondering where you heard that voice before. Then you realize you haven't - it's just that you can not imagine someone with pipes like that not being better known. Ditto this band, and ditto this record. Gladshot is one of the nicest suprises I have had all year." - Pop Matters "...resembles Beach House or Yeah Yeah Yeahs, with a female vocalist fronting a "wall of sound"

Lioness came together, almost in secret, in Toronto in the winter of 2007, when Jeff Scheven and Ronnie Morris, the rhythm section behind the dark, stomping disco pulses of controller.controller, hooked up with Vanessa Fischer of soul-punk quartet No Dynamics. Honing their craft by playing low-key after-hours sets in sweaty, off-the-radar locales throughout the city, the band nonetheless generated a remarkable undercurrent of buzz in the following months, leading to support slots with the likes of !!!, Hercules and the Love Affair, You Say Party! We Say Die!, K-OS, and The Cult.

Their sans-guitar sound is like a head-on collision of old and new, as Fischer draws upon jazz, old soul and blues, roaring and moaning over layers of electronic squall and elastic rhythms like a witch in heat. It's a clash of organic and synthetic, the sound of disco and house music filtered and distorted through the instrumental apparatus of live rock and roll. On stage, they are a synthesis of electronic rock band and performance art project, a drum and bass wall of sound bathed in red light.

Deluka are an English electronic, indie band, whose sound has been likened to nearly every genre from Punk to Disco, Electro to indie and New Wave to No Wave. Deluka's fresh new sound is the eclectic evolution of Birmingham's storied pedigree, a perfect storm of fluid electronic beats and hailing rock riffs, pulsating bass and breathtaking vocals.

Deluka will release their highly anticipated debut full-length album this October on Vel Records. The band has been holed up in the studio writing one of the year's most exciting debuts. Their breakthrough self-titled EP and thrilling live shows were simply the warning shots! Deluka are on a mission to remind you of everything that is exciting and sexy about rock 'n' roll.

"The Knocks are the Big Apple's flyest new production twinkies; they're the scientists of swagger. When not springing around the city's warehouse party circuit like a couple of amorous gazelles, they're being called in to swag-the-hell-out-of beats for everyone from Rihanna to Flo Rida" - NME

"The soothing music of BROTHERTIGER was brought to my attention yesterday afternoon and it has been on repeat ever since. The dude has it figured out. His EP Vision Tunnels is chill, summer, and catchy. BT's layered beats and fuzzy reverb never get old and will be a permanent fixture on my summer playlists." -- Newdust "Chicago avant-pop sextet A Lull have a full-length scheduled to drop later this year; in the meantime, they've made a 7", "Weapons For War/Spread It All Around", available for free download over at their MySpace. The A-side features pounding, layered percussion and warm vocalizing." Pitchfork
TUE 8/10: 7:30pm / $8
"The D.C. duo Birdlips creates a sunset-and-smog glow in its pretty, restrained acoustic tunes... There's a hint of spooky blues and a strong sense of melody in their take on folk, and it doesn't hurt that they emphasize rhythm as much as they do atmosphere" - The Onion "New York's indie-experimental/blues-pop funk infused soft-progressive (fuck) outfit Pocketknife ... spend most of their new EP, We're All Hunters Now, gleefully dipping their pen in all sorts of different inks because, hey, it makes for a more colorful picture." -- Never Learned To Swim "Their music ranges from simply arranged, heartbreaking ballads to raucous foot-tappers, complete with rambling electric guitar solos and handclaps... both call to mind vast and often desolate American landscapes." NPR

New Idea Society has just released The Quiet Prism EP. It is the bands first release since a touring accident in Germany while supporting their last album The World Is Bright And Lonely. Quiet Prism, a five song EP clocking in around 26 minutes is a precursor to the new album out in the late Summer of 2010. Goodbye, Labrador, a Euro-American inspired band with its roots in Brooklyn, blends stateside harmonies with a distinct European nostalgia. Deanna Garcia, with her deep, sensual vocals, puts to work a well-controlled rasp that shades an edge into her melodies (formerly: singing/writing hooks for varied brooklyn hip hop projects, lead singer of The Heart-Ons). Formed in 2001, OLGA (Lisbon, Portugal) features Joao Teotonio (vocals, guitar and keyboards), Joao Hipolito (vocals, bass and guitar) and Diogo Luiz (drums and percussion). With some of the most original and breath-taking arrangements, guided by intense vocal harmonies, OLGA is considered one of the most creative bands emerging from Lisbon's Indie Rock Scene.
THU 8/12: 8pm / $8
The Hounds Below, a new band formed by Jason Stollsteimer, shine new light on a classic sound. Focusing on the beauty rather than the volume of the song, the six-piece band creates a melodic landscape that layers a lush, early rock-and-roll vibe over spacey guitars and an atmospheric-sounding organ. Bonding over a mutual appreciation of old and new music alike--everything from Roy Orbison to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club--the Hounds Below have a sound that spans decades, yet is distinctively their own. Real Detroit columnist Jeff Milo describes the Hounds' style as "presenting a swathe of moodier R&B, smoky soul, stately 50's pop, and still maintaining that dreamy atmospheric fuzz rock sheen."

In the trenches of a post-divorce state of mind, Stollsteimer began writing dark, alluring ballads that would eventually give rise to the Hounds Below. With every reverberating note, the band captures the remorse and poetry behind lost love. But that's not to say that all of their songs are lachrymose. A sizeable proportion of upbeat, danceable numbers complete the sound and provide for an energetic performance. Whether live or recorded, the Hounds Below will captivate and haunt all who listen.

Built on the firm understanding that the best rocknroll is inspired by sexual frustration, confusion, and a hearty dose of alcohol, The Mess Around don't need your love, just a few free drinks and someone to carry their shit. "...EULA is so filled with elements of pop and punk and blaring rock that it's amazing any of them still have eardrums left to help keep them in tune..." - Fensepost
FRI 8/13: 8pm / $7
Pursesnatchers is a home-recording project of Doug Marvin, with able assistance, advice and Melodica-tooting by his wife Annie Hart (Au Revoir Simone). "Fabulous CBGBS style ultra-raw garage pop..Cooler than Lou Reeds shades, more melodic than The Hives and as strutty as The New York Dolls..Yeh!!!" - The Hitmen "A team of dedicated scientists and engineers has started making music, and they are calling themselves the Rosen Association, a contagious dark wave inspired pop collaboration, designed to lift you into another realm, let you float on clouds made of synthesizer and settle in the subtle frequencies of an ambient trip hop trance. The alliance of atmosphere, electronica and dream-pop leads one to having selective, but involuntary visions of the outer twilight. Come get whisked away into the ethereal undertones of the Association…" -- Radio Free Chicago
SAT 8/14: 7:30pm / $8 (EARLY SHOW)
"Los Angeles trio the Delta Mirror say they're of a mind with bands like the Big Pink and Fuck Buttons, acts bent simultaneously toward shoegaze and electronics. But the DM is less expansive and less noisy, respectively, than those acts: Their debut LP Machines That Listen is downcast and down-tempo, heartfelt and brooding, immersive and swirling. It's also gorgeous and incredibly repeatable. The beats are savvy. They glitch and break unpredictably, tricks the trio's Craig Gordon and David Bolt no doubt picked up while working in their hip-hop project prior to this one. Lyrically, each song takes place in a different room of a hospital." -- Stereogum "The Ropes are a sharp duo from New York with the rare balance of hipster cool and pop-ready chops. As I have said before, if in the nineties you were a fan of artists like Garbage and Poe, this should be right up your alley. They are attracting a little, select mainstream attention, but they deserve more." ABC News

"The title to Setting Sun's fourth album, Fantasurreal, is the perfect made-up combination of two words to capture the spirit and sound of the record. Largely the work of one man, Gary Levitt, Setting Sun creates a fantastical mix of whimsy and brightly hued pop matched to a surreal lyrical sensibility that’s the product of either a vivid imagination or some good drugs." - Limewire "Prince seemed outrageous in the '80s, but after years of gangsta rap pushing the sexual envelope, Quitzow sounds relatively subdued when she sing/raps, 'Smoke black tar in my mom's car, skip lunch and go to a strip bar,' it just sounds like good, dirty fun. Quitzow is one of the few female auteurs in pop. She wrote, produced, and played most of the instruments on Juice Water, and it's a blast from start to finish. It's possibly her best work yet. Juice Water may be something of a funky change of direction, but it's also a playful reminder of what makes her music so engaging." (ALL MUSIC GUIDE, Summer 2010)

The Beat was founded by Paul Collins, who spent his pre-teens living in Greece, Vietnam and Europe before returning to his native New York. He studied at the prestigious Julliard Music School and eventually moved to San Francisco where he joined songwriter Jack Lee and bassist Peter Case (The Plimsouls) to form The Nerves in 1974. The Nerves proved to be one of the pioneers of the burgeoning U.S. punk-rock scene, independently releasing their own four song EP which included the classic "Hanging on the Telephone," later to become a hit for Blondie.

After The Nerves disbanded in 1977, Collins moved to LA and formed The Beat with bassist Steve Huff, drummer Mike Ruiz and lead guitarist Larry Whitman. Their friend Eddie Money recommended The Beat for management by legendary concert promoter Bill Graham. Under new management, The Beat toured with The Police, The Jam, and Joe Jackson. They also made numerous TV appearances and recorded their debut self-titled album with producer Bruce Botnick (The Doors, Love). The album featured Beatles and Byrds-influenced guitars and catchy choruses, defining the skinny-tied power-pop which The Knack took to the charts. In the '90s, The Beat re-formed as the Paul Collins' Beat and continue to write and tour releasing critically acclaimed albums for the Get Hip and Alive labels.

Scott Miller blends folk and rock like there ain't no words for. The power of storytelling with the power of a compressed electric guitar comes through this Virginian not heard since the likes of Wayne Newton (fellow Virginian) or The Statler Brothers (also of the Commonwealth.) Chris Mills' Living in the Aftermath is the latest collection from one of America's most wandering-est of wandering troubadours. Mills, once again, threatens to break free from seemingly perpetual obscurity, by providing some of the most unaffected, and yet emotionally affecting work of his career.

Straight from the heart of Texas, veteran Austin power trio Dixie Witch blend riffs heavier than a herd of cattle with instrumental dexterity and the soulful vocals of powerhouse drummer Trinidad Leal. Part of the great southern underground metal tradition that stretches back to C.O.C., they like their Sabbath as much as their Skynyrd and are one of the best live bands on the planet, making them favorites in the states and overseas. (Pictured)

Outer borough champions of high-energy boogie rock, The Brought Low recently released their third full-length album, the aptly titled 'Third Record,' to near-universal acclaim. Heavy music blog The Obelisk called them "the best rock and roll band in New York" and The Big Takeover said "Previous albums have been excellent, but Third Record takes the group to a whole 'nother level, indisputably placing the Brought Low in the ranks of the Great American Bands."

"... they make their musical parents proud, rivaling The Black Keys or Black Sabbath. If you enjoy absolute chaos from a band that only has two members, then you are in for an experience when it comes to The Naked Heroes." - KEXP 90.3 FM Seattle

"With only thirty minutes to wow the audience, The Stationary Set played songs from their highly anticipated upcoming EP, including 'Constitution,' 'A Promise and a Threat,' 'Method Actor,' and 'This is Our Nature.' The songs, composed by the band with lyrics by Andrew, are catchy but also unique. The vibe feels like a mix of Panic At the Disco, The Clash, and Robin Williams." -- Kids Who Go To Shows At the core of Central Chambers, their newest album and third overall, the Northampton, Mass. quintet maintains its signature chamber-indie ambience while exploring new grounds sonically and lyrically. In it, you'll hear production running the gamut from boombox lo-fi to crisp studio sonorousness; dense rockers balanced by quiet hymns; and an overall diversity in instruments and textures. All of this backs the wandering words of songwriter Philip Price, and here we can see him condensing his meditative lyrical approach into mantras contemplating the frailty of humanity. "...a rather transcendent set ...The band was different, melodic, quirky, and just plain good. A sleeper act which hit the mark with an almost Bjork-like panache. Ahh.... Iceland, again." -- The Bonnaroo Beacon
