How do I join?
Sign up for the Bocce Mailing List to stay informed about registration for the next season. You will be contacted approximately one month before the league begins with registration information. Teams can choose to play at Union Hall or Floyd, NY.
How much does it cost to join the league?
Each team must pay $40 per season.
When are the league seasons?
- Spring: January – May
- Summer: June – August
- Winter: September – December
When does league play occur?
Teams play once a week and are separated into three divisions: Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
- Saturday: 12pm – 5pm
- Sunday: 12pm – 5pm
- Monday: 7pm – 10pm
How long does a game of bocce last?
Each game is about one hour long.
How do playoffs and finals work?
At the end of each season, the top ranked 16 teams will participate in a single elimination tournament. First and Second place winners receive trophies and prizes.
How are teams ranked?
Team rankings are determined by a total score that takes into consideration the percentage of games won out of games played, games defaulted, and scores against.
What are the prizes?
Prizes vary from season to season. In the past, they have included restaurant gift certificates and cash prizes.
What happens if a team cannot make a game?
If you know in advance that your team will not be able to make a game, you are free to reschedule the game for another date. If the opposing team is not able to reschedule, or if you do not show up to a game and have not made arrangements to reschedule, you will receive a Default. Any team with more than 2 Defaults cannot move on to the Playoffs.
How many people do I need to form a team?
Teams must have a minimum of 4 players on the court during each game. If a team does not meet this minimum, the game cannot be played and the team will receive a Default. If a team knows in advance that they will not have enough players at a specific game, they are allowed to bring in non-League Member substitute players.
What kind of trousers are suitable for bocce league play?
Flat front trousers are recommended for comfort and are more fashion forward. However, a multi-pleat front allows for a deep low stance without bunching which is ideal for bocce rolling. Either are acceptable as are jeans.
Should I bring an uptight, aggressive, and angry attitude to league play?
The object of the game of bocce is for one team to get as many of their balls closer to the pallino than the opposing team’s closest ball.
The toss of a coin determines which team will start. The starting team chooses which color (or pattern) ball they will play with. The first team member throws the pallino and then rolls his/her first ball as close to the pallino as possible. It is now up to the opposing team to roll a ball closer to the pallino than the starting team. If the opposing team uses all four balls and fails to get closer to pallino than the starting ball, the starting team rolls each of their remaining balls, trying to place them closer than the opponent’s closest ball. However, if the opposing team succeeds in placing one of their balls closer to the pallino, the starting team must then roll again to attempt to get closer or “better the point”. Each team continues to roll until it beats the point of the opposite team. While the object is to get close to the pallino, it is permissible for a player to roll his/her ball as to knock an opponent’s ball away from the pallino. Likewise, a player may knock or move the pallino toward his/her own team’s balls. The pallino is playable anywhere on the playing surface.
When all balls have been played, this concludes the frame and ONE team is awarded one point for each of its balls which is closer to the pallino than the closest opposing team’s ball. Thus, a team may score up to four points per frame.
If the closest ball of each team is equal in distance from the pallino, NO points are awarded. The team that scores in a frame starts the next frame by throwing out the pallino and playing their first ball. Play continues until a team wins by reaching a score of 7 points.
